Bahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa internasional yang digunakan di era globalisasi seperti pada era Masyarakat Ekonomi Asia (MEA). Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu dari enam bahasa yang diakui Perserikatan Bangsa Bangsa (PBB) dalam hubungan diberbagai bidang seperti ekonomi, pertahanan maupun pendidikan. Pada dunia pendidikan, kompetensi berbahasa mencakup empat keterampilan yakni mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca dan menulis. Target dari pengajaran bahasa Inggris yaitu mencapai kemampuan berkomunikasi baik secara lisan ataupun tulisan. Mempelajari bahasa Inggris memberikan peserta didik kemampuan untuk mendapatkan akses ke dunia luar dan memahami cara berpikir yang berbeda. Pemahaman mereka terhadap pengetahuan sosial- budaya dan interkultural ini dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis.
